Witnessing Social Identity:
Healing Individually and Collectively Through Shared Presence in Groups

Witnessing our social identity is about love. It's about discovering how to stay present with the complexities of who we are within systems that have shaped us, so we can respond from wholeness rather than reactivity.

The Power of Affinity Group Healing

In my experience, witnessing social identity work is most powerful when begun in affinity group spaces—people who share overlapping lived experiences of particular social identities. Based on my own mixed-race ancestry and embodied exploration, I facilitate this work in affinity groups exploring whiteness, Native identity, mixed-race or mixed-culture lineages, and women's spaces.

Affinity groups aren't an endpoint, but a crucial step that allows us to make systemic impacts like race more visible and felt within 'safe-enough' spaces among people who share some experiences.  This creates a foundation to bring more embodied awareness into mixed groups and the wider world.

What it is:

Witnessing Social Identity combines heart-centered communication skills with embodied group healing practices to address both personal wounds and the collective traumas embedded in our social systems—including how the domination paradigm has caused harm to all of us, even those it centers. Drawing from the ancient wisdom that recognizes our fundamental interconnectedness, this approach recognizes that individual and collective transformation are inseparable.

The domination paradigm—connected with colonization, patriarchy, and racialization—is constructed to be invisible to those it centers. This invisibility creates numbness and disconnection, preventing the very people who could transform these systems from seeing their impact clearly. Witnessing Social Identity practices make these invisible dynamics visible through embodied awareness.

How it works:

We begin by learning to connect compassionately with our own inner experience—our feelings, needs, and body sensations, including whatever arises when we turn toward difficult social realities like racism and our roles within these systems. From this foundation of embodied self-awareness, we expand into witnessing challenging social topics together in affinity group spaces.

Embodied contemplation questions become powerful tools for transformation: What do you sense in your body when you presence awareness of your social identity? What do you notice when you turn toward the impact of systemic issues in the world around you? When we share these vulnerable explorations in witnessed community, individual healing is magnified, and collective patterns can begin to shift.

What makes it unique:

This practice recognizes that we each carry some combination of both victim and perpetrator within our lineages and lived experience. This understanding opens pathways to compassionate accountability even when difficult emotions like shame or defensiveness arise. For those with mixed-race, mixed-culture, or complex ancestral streams, the integration process includes not only healing within particular lineages but also exploring the historical relationships between lineages and how we experience that in our bodies.

Instead of choosing between inner healing or outer activism, we discover how they support each other. When we can share the weight of confronting difficult truths about our social conditioning rather than carry it alone, transformation becomes possible, and we can discover our authentic response instead of reactivity or getting stuck in overwhelm.

What to expect:

You'll develop practical capacity for:
  • Increasing your capacity to be present while turning towards systemic impact and your place within domination systems
  • Recognizing when you're overwhelmed by guilt, shame, numbness, or defensiveness and how to co-regulate and return to center
  • Building resilience to witness the effects of collective trauma without getting stuck in reactivity
  • Discovering your authentic response to healing and transformation within your communities
  • Relationality in supportive affinity group spaces for ongoing empowerment, responsibility, and embodied wisdom

Who it's for:

People who feel the weight of social injustice and want to respond from presence. Whether you're new to examining your social identity or have been engaged in justice work, this practice offers a way to transform the pain of confronting systemic harm into embodied wisdom, and isolation into accountable community.

It's especially challenging to find an embodied response to what we're not aware of. Even when we understand systemic issues intellectually, increasing our capacity to feel our own and others' subjective experiences contributes essential intelligence to our body-mind systems. As we feel more, we grow our compassion and embodied wisdom.

A Portal to Transformation:

When groups come together to intentionally face systemic issues through witnessed presence, a healing movement begins to unfold. Our practice becomes a portal to peace, love, and honoring our interconnection in an embodied way. It helps us access the spaciousness within and between us, increasing our capacity to stay related where people often polarize.

As the Native teachings remind us, each of us is a point of contact for 14 generations—7 that came before and 7 that emerge from here. Through witnessing social identity, we can unfold mystical, ancestrally restorative interconnectedness that resonates through us into our ecosystems and across the river of time.
