Glossary of Terms
White Supremacy (System of): A global system—born of colonialism—that privileges whiteness as the standard and marginalizes people of the global majority. Not about individual hate, but systemic power.
Colonialism: The violent process of land theft, cultural erasure, and domination of Indigenous peoples, still present today through political, economic, and institutional systems.
Patriarchy: A system of social organization that privileges men and masculine-coded traits, while devaluing femininity, emotionality, and nonbinary existence.
Embodied Witnessing: The practice of staying present in the body while noticing, holding, and being with the emotional and physical experience of others (and ourselves), without fixing or fleeing.
Somatics: Practices and frameworks that connect body, mind, and experience—including the nervous system—as a pathway toward healing and integration.
Internalized Oppression: The way people come to believe and embody harmful messages directed at their own identity group(s), often unconsciously.
Disembodiment: The loss of connection to one’s body, often as a survival response to trauma or systemic conditioning.
Liberatory Practice: Any personal or collective work that resists oppression and moves toward justice, healing, and freedom for all.
Global Majority: A decolonial alternative to terms like “minorities” or “BIPOC,” honoring that people of African, Indigenous, Asian, and Latin descent make up the majority of the global population.
Repair: The process of acknowledging harm, taking responsibility, and engaging in action that seeks healing and accountability—not just apology.
Allyship (Evolving): A lifelong practice of listening, taking responsibility, and using one's privilege to support those with less systemic power—not for personal redemption, but for collective liberation.
